The Pre-eclampsia Integrated Estimate of RiSk (PIERS) study is a multicentre
international study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
, the World Health Organization UNDP/UNFPA/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of
Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction, Preeclampsia Foundation,
International Federation of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FIGO),
Michael Smith Foundation for Health
Research (MSFHR), and Child and Family Research
Institute (CFRI).
The purpose
of this research is to develop the first pre-eclampsia classification system
based on that system’s ability to predict adverse maternal (& perinatal)
outcomes.
Development of the fullPIERS models has been completed and the project is
currently into its next phase: external validation. Validation will take place in high
and low risk clinical settings in Developed and Developing World centres, for
both pre-eclampsia and the other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
The miniPIERS model is being developed and validated in low and middle income countries with
funding from the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, CIHR, WHO, USAID,
Rockefeller Foundation, FIGO
and Preeclampsia Foundation.
The PIERS
Study Group welcomes any international centres interested in joining the project
for future implementation studies.
